Eight Portable Images by Fotis Kontoglou of Kydonia
“The Holy Mountain for the blessed Photios Kontoglou (1895-1965), the confessor of the immaculate Orthodox faith and the eloquent preacher of the spiritual beauty of Byzantine painting, was the font in which he was re-baptized and primarily discovered here the treasures of Orthodoxy… The Grigoriou Monastery was one of his favorite monasteries. In 1923, he designed the southern side of the monastery from the sea, while he had already copied in black and white an icon of Saint John the Baptist… The monastery did not have original works by F. Kontoglou. However, a generous donation from the noble and pious Staikidis family of Chalkida enriched the monastery with 8 episcopal icons that adorned the iconostasis of the chapel of the Virgin Myrtidiotissa of Saint Nectarios in Manika, Chalkida… The icons are 83×50 cm in size and are painted with the traditional technique of egg tempera, but on MDF boards to avoid damage from the contraction and expansion of the wood. The holy figures are depicted up to or slightly below the waist, so that the face dominates, and the communication of the worshipper with the prototype is more direct. The strict frontal position of the figures particularly emphasizes their sacredness.”
