A fan brush does two jobs. The first is soft blending: passed dry and light over fresh colour, it melts the border between two tones without leaving a mark of its own. The second is texture: the open hairs leave many fine lines in a single pass, the fastest way to paint grasses, branches, hair, fur, and waves.
The hair sets the character. Soft synthetics and natural hair blend tones discreetly, in oil, acrylic, and watercolour. Stiffer hog bristle leaves a bolder, textured mark in heavy paint.
