Drawing Inks

Drawing inks are used for drawing, calligraphy, illustration, and mixed media with brushes, dip pens, technical pens, or airbrush. Available in different types: water-based inks that dilute and mix easily, shellac-based inks (India ink) that are waterproof after drying, and acrylic inks that offer vibrant colours and permanent results. Each type offers different possibilities from fine lines to expressive washes and gradients.

Drawing inks are liquid, intensely pigmented media that offer exceptional fluidity and line precision. India ink is the most traditional choice—black, shellac-based, waterproof after drying, ideal for technical drawing, manga, comics, and calligraphy. Water-based inks remain soluble even after drying, allowing wash and blending effects, suitable for expressive drawing and urban sketching. Acrylic inks combine the fluidity of ink with the permanence of acrylics, offering vibrant, luminous colours that are waterproof and lightfast.

Inks are available in bottles with droppers for precise dosing, and are used with various tools: brushes for free drawing and washes, dip pens for calligraphy and fine lines, technical pens that accept certain inks, and airbrush for uniform surfaces. They’re used on smooth drawing paper, cardboard, bristol board, and some withstand even canvas. For beginners, water-based inks are recommended for their flexibility, while for permanent works choose India ink or acrylic inks. See also our dip pens, brushes, and drawing papers.
