Painting Surfaces
Stretched canvases are available in many sizes and various materials (jute, linen, cotton, synthetic) with different textures and colours, from natural raw to white primed with gesso. Canvas rolls are sold in large quantities (many square meters) or smaller pieces cut to size. Illustration board (cartolino) is rigid cardboard with canvas paper for drawing, watercoloθr, tempera, and mixed media, available in white or pre-drawn. Stretched canvases are available in many sizes and various materials with different characteristics. Jute has rough texture and natural brown colour, suitable for expressive works with heavy impasto. Linen is dense fabric with smooth texture and great durability over time, preferred for works requiring detail. Cotton has even surface and is the most common material, suitable for oil paints and acrylics. Synthetic fabrics are stable to moisture and don’t warp.
Canvas rolls are sold in large quantities for those stretching their own canvases or working at large scale, as well as smaller pieces cut to size. Illustration board (cartolino) is rigid cardboards with canvas paper that don’t bend, suitable for pencil, markers, tempera, watercolor, and mixed media. Available in white or pre-drawn with outlines for direct colouring. Material and surface choice depends on technique and desired result.
