A flat brush works with two sides. The broad face lays colour evenly and covers surface fast, and the thin edge draws a straight, clean line. Between the two sits a third way of working: the corner of the tip catches detail, edges, and small corrections, work many painters do with the flat instead of changing brushes.
The choice starts with the hair. Stiff flats, in hog bristle or firm synthetics, move heavy colour, build texture, and keep the stroke visible in oil and acrylic. Soft flats, in gentle synthetics or natural hair, lay colour without marks, and take on even fills, varnishes, and glazes. In watercolour, flats lay washes in wide, straight bands.
Width follows the job. Narrow sizes keep control on lines and edges, the middle widths carry the main body of a painting, and wide flats fill grounds and large surfaces. In a well-made flat, the hairs hold their edge straight and unified, corner to corner.
