Iconography varnishes

Iconography varnishes protect the finished work: they unify the sheen of the surface, deepen the colours, and guard it from dust, humidity, and light. The range covers traditional and modern varnishes, in matte, satin, and gloss finishes, for panel icons and wall paintings.

Varnish is the final hand laid on an icon. Egg tempera dries matte, with an uneven sheen between colours, and the varnish draws the surface into one finish, deepens the dark tones, and brings the colour to life. At the same time it seals the work against dust, humidity, and light.

Timing matters: egg tempera cures first, and the final varnish goes onto a surface that has settled. Modern icon varnishes brush or spray on easily, come in matte, satin, and gloss, often carry a UV filter for the pigments, and can be removed when the time comes to renew them. The finish is an aesthetic choice: gloss gives depth and intensity, matte keeps the surface quiet, satin balances between them.

Art & Colour carries iconography varnishes for panel icons and wall paintings, beside the pigments, brushes, and the other materials of the icon workshop.
