Mechanical Pencils
Mechanical pencils keep a graphite point that is always ready and always the same: fine leads from 0.3 to 0.9 mm for writing, technical drawing and detail, and 2 mm clutch pencils for sketching with a shapeable point. The usual starting point is a 0.5 mm pencil with HB leads.

The mechanical pencil makes one promise and keeps it: the point is always ready, and the line never changes. No sharpener, no shavings, no slow thickening of the stroke as you work. That is why it lives wherever consistency matters: technical and linear drawing, architectural plans, notes and diagrams, the fine detail pass over a loose sketch.
The lead diameter sets the line. 0.3 mm draws the thinnest, for plans and intricate detail. 0.5 mm is the everyday middle, fine enough for drawing, comfortable enough for writing. 0.7 mm lays a fuller line and takes a heavier hand without snapping, which makes it the safe choice for fast notes. Each barrel accepts exactly one diameter, and the leads come in their own hardness grades, so the same pencil can write in HB and shade in 2B.
The 2 mm clutch pencil is the older instrument of the drafting table. Its jaws hold a full-length lead, released with a press of the button, and a lead pointer shapes the tip to a needle or lets it wear broad. It comes closest to the feel of a wooden pencil, with leads reaching into the soft artists’ grades.
