Reading the Image of Christmas
By venerating the sacred image of Christmas, whose symbolism is analyzed in this book, the faithful respond to the call of the psalm “Come, let us see, O faithful, where Christ was born” and study, “reading” with their eyes, both the flesh and the soul, the theology of the Feast. Color, design, and composition become theology. Without depriving the viewer-believer of the joy of the senses, which always accompanies great art such as Orthodox and ecclesiastical painting, the image of the Nativity of Christ succeeds in becoming the gateway to the “mystery, strange and paradoxical.”
