Gilding Size Mixtion
Gilding sizes hold the gold leaf on the surface. They come in three families, water-based, alcohol-based, and oil-based (mixtion), and each gives the gilding a different finish. The range covers sizes for panel icons, church work, frames, and craft.

The gilding size is a basic material for byzantine iconography and gold work on different surfaces.
Mixtion is the size of oil gilding. It is laid in a thin coat, and the leaf settles when the surface reaches the right tack: it grips the knuckle without wetting it. Mixtions are named by their open time, one hour, three hours, twelve, and the time also sets the shine: the slower the mixtion, the deeper the shine of the gold. Oil gilding works on gesso, wood, metal, and walls, and it is the usual choice for large surfaces and church work.
Water-based sizes spread easily, hold a steady tack for hours, and suit craft, frames, and imitation leaf. Alcohol-based sizes dry fast for work at pace. And for water gilding, with its deep agate burnish, the foundation is bole with the traditional glue, in its own category.
