Watercolour paper is made for water: it takes washes, layering, and lifting while the surface keeps the colour bright. It comes in three finishes, hot press (smooth), cold press (medium texture), and rough, in weights from 190 to 640gsm, and as sheets, pads, blocks, and rolls.

Watercolour paper is made for water, and every choice about it comes down to three things: finish, weight, and fibre.
The finish sets the character of the wash. Hot press is smooth, suited to botanical work, fine detail, and ink. Cold press carries a medium grain and handles nearly every technique, which is why most painters live on it. Rough holds the deepest texture and shows granulating colours at their best. Weight decides behaviour under water: 300gsm stays flat through wet work, and lighter papers want stretching first. Fibre decides longevity: 100% cotton absorbs evenly, stands up to scrubbing and corrections, and lasts for decades, while cellulose papers make honest practice sheets.
The formats are sheets, pads, blocks, and rolls. A block is glued around all four edges, so the sheet stays taut while you paint and lifts off with a palette knife once dry.
