Painting Paper

The paper is a working part of every painting and drawing: it decides how far a wash spreads, how many layers a surface holds, and how the finished work survives the years. Matching the paper to the medium is a real part of the work.

Each medium has its papers. Watercolour paper is the heavyweight, typically 300 gsm, made to drink water without buckling; its surface runs from smooth hot press for detail and ink, through cold press, the versatile middle, to rough, where the texture itself becomes part of the painting. Drawing and sketch papers are lighter and smoother, made for graphite, ink and everyday work. Charcoal and pastel papers carry a deep, deliberate tooth that grips layer after layer of dry pigment, often in a range of tones. Papers for oils and acrylics are sized so the paint sits on the surface, and mixed media papers take wet and dry work on the same page.

Three marks tell you the quality of a sheet. The weight in gsm says what it can take. Cotton fibre is many times stronger than wood cellulose, which is why cotton papers forgive lifting and reworking. And acid-free paper holds its colour for decades. Formats follow the way you work: loose sheets for large pieces, pads for everyday volume, and blocks glued on four sides that keep the sheet flat through wet work with no stretching.
