Art markers put colour down with the immediacy of a pen: alcohol markers for saturated colour and smooth blends, water-based markers for soft effects and mixed media, acrylic paint markers for work on wood, stone, glass and canvas. The usual starting point is a small set of alcohol or water-based markers.

A marker is colour at its most immediate: the cap comes off and the colour is there, full strength, exactly as it will stay. There is no palette to set up and nothing to wait for, which is why markers turn up wherever an idea wants out fast: illustration and comics, lettering and calligraphy, sketching in the street, colouring, painting straight onto mugs, pebbles, wooden boxes and walls.
The ink defines the family. Alcohol markers are the illustrator’s tool: colours settle evenly and meet in smooth gradients, and quality ranges take refills and replacement nibs, so a good set lasts for years. Water-based markers are the mildest and the most welcoming place to start, and many spread with a wet brush into washes close to watercolour. Acrylic markers carry real acrylic paint, opaque, reading just as clearly on black as on white, and holding on wood, glass, stone, clay and canvas.
