Erasers divide into two families. The kneaded eraser presses onto the mark and lifts it: the particles of graphite, charcoal, and pastel stick to it and come away with it, leaving the paper surface untouched. It moulds to a point for small areas, and on charcoal it presses into the dark to open highlights. Plastic and vinyl erasers work by friction and clear the mark completely, while precision erasers, in pencil and pen form, erase lines and small details. For deep corrections, the kneaded lifts most of it first and the plastic clears the rest.
Sharpeners are chosen by the point they cut. Metal and canister sharpeners cut the classic conical point, quickly and anywhere, often with two holes for standard and thick pencils. Desktop crank sharpeners cut a long, even point that holds more drawing, and for the soft materials, a knife and a sandpaper block bring the point to whatever shape the work asks, from a needle for detail to a broad edge for shading.
