Iconography tools are the small precision instruments of the icon workshop: agate burnishers for polishing the gold, compasses and ruling pens for haloes and straight lines, incising tools for the drawing, and the gilder’s tools for handling gold leaf.

Each stage of the icon has its instrument.
The agate is the tool of burnishing. The polished stone, shaped for flats and curves, presses the gold leaf onto the bole and brings it from matte to the deep mirror shine of water gilding. The compass draws the halo: its circle is set with the precision of an instrument, and the ruling pen draws its painted rings, along with the straight lines of borders and inscriptions, at a steady width from start to finish. Incising tools transfer the drawing onto the gesso and score the outlines that will guide the painting and the gilding.
Gold leaf has its own tools: a knife for cutting, a cushion for laying out, and the wide flat brush that lifts the loose leaf with static and sets it in place.
