The prepared panel is an essential part of painting portable icons. Sizing with glue and linen gauze, successive coats of traditional gesso in chalk or marble dust, and sanding to an even, smooth, white surface. The drawing transfers onto it and the egg tempera begins at once.
Our workshop has prepared icon panels the traditional way, following the standards of Byzantine iconography, for many decades. Dimensions run from small icons to large commissions, in a range of wood types, with battens on the larger sizes for stability over time.
