In carved panels, the frame of the icon is cut into the wood itself. The centre stays smooth for the painting, and the border is worked in relief, with crosses, plant motifs, and the geometric interlace of the Byzantine tradition.
The carving is done by hand, with chisels, on wood that cuts cleanly and holds detail. The relief works together with the gilding: gold leaf settles over the carving and the light plays on its edges, giving the finished icon the depth of the old iconostases. The smooth areas take gesso and egg tempera in the usual way.
