The icon begins on wood. Egg tempera asks for a rigid, absorbent surface, and the prepared panel provides it: layers of traditional gesso, glue with chalk or marble dust, sanded to a smooth white ground that receives the paint and the gilding.
The choice is a matter of workshop. Unprepared wood, dry and stable, is for those who lay the gesso themselves, to their own recipe. Prepared panels have been through the whole process, the successive coats and the sanding, and take paint at once. In carved and recessed panels, the centre sinks and the border stands raised, giving the icon its traditional frame within the wood itself.
Icon canvas is worked on its own or glued over wood in the old practice, and suits large commissions. Iconography papers are the surface of apprenticeship: studies, line exercises, and colour trials, at small cost and easy to store.
Art & Colour carries iconography surfaces in every form and size, beside the pigments, brushes, and preparation materials of the workshop.
