Iconography Glues and Resins
Glues and resins are the raw materials of the icon workshop. The traditional glues prepare the gesso and size the surface of the icon, and the resins make varnishes and fixatives. The range includes fish glue, rabbit-skin glue, shellac, and other natural and synthetic materials.

Glues and resins are the materials of the workshop that prepares its own surfaces and media, following the traditional recipes.
The glues work in preparation. Rabbit-skin glue and fish glue dissolve in warm water, size the wood, and bind the traditional gesso: glue with chalk or marble dust, laid in successive coats and sanded to a smooth white surface, ready to receive egg tempera and gilding. The same glue, thinned further, also goes into the bole for water gilding.
The resins work at completion. Shellac, in flakes dissolved in alcohol, gives a varnish that isolates layers, seals surfaces, and shines with a warm amber tone. Beside it, natural and synthetic resins serve varnishes and fixatives, following the recipe of each workshop.
