An icon passes through three stages, and each stage has its materials. Preparation comes first. The traditional glues, fish glue and rabbit-skin glue, bind the gesso and size the surface, so the egg tempera takes properly and holds over time. Gilding follows: bole is laid under the gold leaf, giving it the deep, warm ground that shines under burnishing, while gilding sizes, water-based and oil-based, hold the leaf in place. Finishing comes last: resins such as shellac, and iconography varnishes, seal the completed work, unify the surface, and protect it for the decades ahead of it.
