A round brush works two ways within one gesture: the tip draws line and detail, and more pressure opens the stroke to fill surface. That is why it is the lead brush in so many techniques, from watercolour to iconography.
The choice starts with the hair. Soft rounds, in natural hair or gentle synthetics, hold a full load of colour and a fine point, suited to watercolour, egg tempera, and iconography, where the work runs on fluid paint and precision. Stiff rounds, in hog bristle or firm synthetics, push heavy colour and leave a live, visible stroke in oil and acrylic.
Size follows the job. Numbers 000 to 2 carry detail and line, the middle sizes 4 to 8 do the main body of a painting, and the large numbers fill surfaces and grounds. In a well-made round, the point reforms after every stroke, and that is the first thing to check in any brush.
