Miniature and model brushes are built for work at the scale of centimetres: faces smaller than a fingernail, panel lines, freehand details on a shoulder pad.
The heart of the kit is the small pointed round, and the most useful fact in the category is counterintuitive: experienced miniature painters prefer a size 0 or 1 over the tiniest numbers. A round with a sharp point paints finer detail than a 000, because its body holds a reserve of paint that feeds the tip continuously, keeping the line flowing through the stroke. Point, not size, does the detail. Kolinsky sable rounds are the benchmark for exactly that reason: the point reforms with every stroke, and the body carries the colour to it.
Synthetics take the specialist roles. Firmer synthetic rounds and flats lay the base colours and carry metallic paints, and drybrushes, domed or flat, catch the raised edges of a model, the fastest way to bring out texture on armour, cloth, and stone.
