Gum Damar

Authentic Natural Resin Gum Damar from Asia. Gum damar is a cloudy, slightly yellow natural resin with smooth cracking, used in protective varnishes and as a medium in painting and iconography. It is of high quality and hand-selected.

Suitable for use with other resins, oils, powders, pigments, tempera, and watercolours, for creating paints as well as a raw material for making varnish. Damar is ideal for creating light, transparent, and clear varnishes. Such varnishes are used as a final coating on oil painting or tempera works. Additionally, it can be used as an additive or thinner in oil paints, increasing the drying time. When preparing varnishes or paints, high-quality turpentine oil (double-distilled) should be used for the best results.

  • Natural resin in small pieces
  • Damar consists of 40% resin that dissolves in alcohol (alpha-resin) and approximately 22% resin that does not dissolve in alcohol (beta-resin)
  • It softens at around 90°C and melts at 180°C
  • Damar dissolves partially in alcohol and completely in turpentine, chloroform, carbon disulfide, or petroleum ether
  • It is derived from the trees of the Diptocarpaceae family
  • Damar and its preparations should be stored in containers that protect them from sunlight
  • Packaging: 100 gr, 1000 gr
