The Character and the Reason of the Abstract Trends in Byzantine Painting

…we focus our attention on a very specific and particular issue, aiming to determine the “nature” and character of the “abstract” tendency observed in the forms of Byzantine painting, with reference to and in comparison with the corresponding trend observed in amorphous, non-representational, abstract painting.
With our text, we aim, in the long term, to explore the artistic “self-awareness” of Byzantine painting in relation to modern Western painting, specifically to determine the unique reason that governs and runs through the Byzantine painting system.
